new camera

I finally recently bought myself a digital SLR camera. I’ve been wanting one since my first year of college, but I never had the cash together. In the last few years the prices for digital SLR’s have become somewhat reasonable and entry level DSLR’s have flourished on the market. I spent days pouring over reviews and information trying to decide which camera to buy (that wouldn’t leave me scraping together grocery money for months.) After a while of researching and talking to other photographer friends of mine, I decided on a Nikon D40. It’s not a super fantastic camera, but its going to serve my needs beautifully.

I’m in love. Simply in love. With a camera. That’s probably illegal in most states.

I had promised my husband he would be the first thing I took a picture of with it, but he wasn’t home when the camera was. So the cat got the honors. (Actually the first image was a very blurry looking blob of my cat, I had Manual selected on the lens. Figured that out pretty quick though.)

This shot was taken with the flash. Don’t ask me what the aperture and speed was… I didn’t write it down. Pretty damned good for the one it came with. SOOC, aside from retouching my cats demon eyes. Its like red eye. Only demony. And green.

A friend told me to grab this flash when I could, because it gets incredibly better coverage. My first extra purchase will probably be a telephoto lens, but I will keep the flash in mind for the future.

See? I did take a picture of him later on when he was home and looking damn fine as always. SOOC.

Then I added some actions from Pioneer Woman. Free Photoshop actions!! I tweek them when I use them, but they’re a great start. ;)

I know, right?! Now you know why I married him. I should have spent more time retouching, but honestly, its late, Greek is on at nine and I have to finish reading Jeaniene Frost’s At Graves End before I explode with anticipation.

Here’s my adorable cat again for the road. Pink cat tongue! I love it. My old point and shoot’s got nothin’ on this baby.

More soon. I’m restarting Project 365 – Self Portraits again for… maybe the third time. Let’s see if I can get a whole year this time.

Drying Herbs

herb drying

I planted my first herb garden on our balcony this summer and it’s been flourishing faster than I can cook with it! The time has come to cultivate some of the herbs for some early drying.

The only problem is that I have a tiny kitchen and a cat. There was no place to put the herbs without destroying the kitchen and the cat is ever curious.

I ended up with these herb bags pictured above. I strung all the herbs I snipped onto some thread, stuck the clump in a bag and fished a chop stick through the bag for the string to rest on, keeping the herbs dry, away from light and suspended in the bag.

Now I can stash these anywhere! They’ll probably end up on the top of my desk since there’s ample room and the cat has become disinterested with my side of the office.

I was going to do a tutorial for this but it seemed sort of self explanatory after I laid all the items out on the table. My only trick is that I put scotch tape on the bags where the chopsticks poke through so it wont rip. Ever do that with a balloon and a pin? Wicked fun. :D

I hope this inspires some of you to do the same or come up with your own herb drying remedy!

And in case you’re wondering, my herb garden contains Sweet Basil, Rosemary, Sage, Parsley, Thyme, Oregano and Marjoram. The Cilantro didn’t make it, not that I mind. I discovered that neither myself nor my husband really like it. The Thyme isn’t playing nice with… anything else. >.< Notes for the future: Plant all herbs in separate pots.

I have been cooking with these herbs since I planted them. Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats fresh herbs in home cooking. Nothing.

June books

Oops!

Quick reviews of the books I read in June towards 52 books in 52 weeks. This was a month of re-reads and free e-books.

  • Lover Eternal

Yes I re-read this. I don’t know what I found anything new in it honestly. But I needed some good comfort reading and this hit the spot.

  • Lover Revealed

Still haven’t gotten that entire reading in order thing down yet with Ward’s books. I really only re-read this because I was trying to find fodder for an article. Maybe fodder is the wrong word. Sources sounds better. ;)

  • Wicked Ties

Impossible love! Reunion! Romance! Mystery! Ok, the “real” plot of the novel was pretty cool. A woman who hosts a sex talk show on cable (no, I’m not kidding) is being stalked by her ex-boyfriend. Her new lover is a body guard who kicks his ass. Typical romance, but the writing was pretty good.

  • Surrender

This was a collection of romances, and I honestly can only remember that one of the couples was married and I liked that story the best. The others were far fetched and… forgettable.

  • Baby Bonanza

So Harlequin Romance (read a few, then you can judge us) is 60 this year and to celebrate they have a dozen or so titles they’re giving away for free. My new iTouch and I couldn’t resist. This was one of those freebies and I loved it! It was quick, absolutely ridiculous and had a silly happy ending. Its the equivalent of eating a really good dessert at a restaurant. You’d never do it on a regular basis, it tastes remarkable and you don’t really feel guilty afterwards. Except I’m addicted now.

  • Slow Hands

Another freebie, this one was more tragically ridiculous but I still enjoyed it. Happy ending. :P

  • Price of Passion

Yet another… but you know what? This one was really good aside from the steamy scenes. The characters were rightfully complex and they didn’t fall into bed in the first three chapters. They didn’t get together until the end and they still had some shit to work out even then. Considering I got this book for free, I seriously ripped HQN off. ;)

Gamer Girl Review

I guess 94/\/\3R 91RL was probably too convoluted for a publisher to run with, so the title of the book is actually Gamer Girl. I get that. Really. I do. Onto the review! I thought people might start rioting if I didn’t start reviewing again. I know Book Bundle will be elated that I’ve come out of my cave. ;)

GamerGirl Final

Gamer Girl by Mari Mancusi should have actually been titled A Girl Who Games. As any internet nerd will tell you, a “Gamer Girl” only plays games to win the affections of video game nerds. A “Girl Who Games” is a girl who likes to play video games. That’s what I am, so I know the difference, the author knows the difference and now you do too. But, again, for the purposes of the publishing world the title is Gamer Girl and is about a girl who games. I just wanted to be clear on that. Its also possible that I’m stalling.

I really adored this book and not because its secretly about World of Warcraft (Mancusi calls it Fields of Fantasy… she might as well have called it Planet of Battles, but “FoF” looks better and more like “WoW”) I loved it because Mari Mancusi managed to capture the essence of teenage drama, first loves and online gaming and she’s made it accessible to anyone. (And she adds in some internet safety too, kudos!)

If you know anyone who plays an MMO you can attest that listening to them speak about it is like listening to Portuguese. I know not only because I speak this weird language, but I wrote a linguistic anthropology paper on it in college. Yea, I’m that much of a nerd. Mancusi did a geart job of not using these gaming terms. At first it was a little obnoxious (omg, call it a MOB!) but after a chapter or two you start to understand that not every reader knows what DOTs or DPS means. Spells and “beating it up” sound just fine and they mean the same thing. ;)

On top of toning down the innate language she does a really fantastic job of making the story seem totally real. Its an age old story, a girl and guy fall for each other in secret, neither knows who the other is and when they do find out, its awful, they’re in different cliques, it’ll never work, it gets worse and then they suddenly end up together and live happily ever after. Having gone to a weird awesome high school where social hierarchy was limited to who was a student and who was a teacher (and let me tell you, even that line got blurry sometimes) reading or watching things where the popular kids “own the school” and the sub defectives try to keep to themselves for risk of being hazed is like watching National Geographic for me. I just don’t get it. But I know about it and I know that this story does a good job of going there. The difference between this and all the other “Cinderella” stories is the way Mancusi weaves in plots and points from the video game into the real world. The main character is also writing a manga that mirrors the books main plot as well.

I’m a sucker for multiple plot paths all pointing in the same direction. I love mirrored allegory and I love video games and the fact that Mancusi gone to Scott Westerfeld-like lengths to wrap her characters gaming experience into her real life and that character’s manga makes me really appreciate her ability to tell a story from multiple angles. Aside from being really well written, Mancusi also takes time to set some women empowerment into her story, which I think is a huge plus for any YA novel these days. Girls don’t go around sniveling for boys anymore. They stand up for themselves (in the end anyway) and its totally clear that they would be just fine sans the boy. But, you know, they’re fun to kiss (and they make great tanks!) I think Mari Mancusi and I would get along real well in real life.

A double post, with pie!

Mario and Firefly

It dawned on me this morning that having two blogs is… time consuming. So for the time being, most of my crafting and art is also going to be posted here at shiny shiny. The latest project has been cross stitch and video games. And cross stitching video games! I think I like having more freedom for creative expression in x-stitch. Is this nerdy? Yes. Am I nerdy? Yes. Match made in heaven. I’m working on another one right now… possibly more things firefly related. Since I’m rather in love with it. Any suggestions?

FYI that is a quote from Joss Whedon’s show, “Firefly” with Mario and Yoshi. I suppose if you’re a fellow Brown Coat you know what it means. ;) If not… get thee to Netflix and watch Firefly! You won’t be sorry.
