My shelves…

books!

Booking Through Thursday 2-19-09
How do you arrange your books on your shelves? Is it by author, by genre, or you just put it where it falls on?

Normally… these pictures would stay hidden from public eyes. But since the question was raised… this is how I store my books.

This is merely the first layer on this shelf…

The other half of layer one.

The second layer, yeah that’s an empty book jacket. Pretend that The Host is there…

Second layer continued

My Terry Pratchett books! My bookshelf is dancing with glee!

This is the bottom shelf of this one, you can see where the craft books start…

More craft books… those binders are all of the patterns I’ve printed out. The pink one is my patterns, the purple ones are knitting and the white one is crochet.

Here is the scary table of doom… this is the reason I went on my book diet.

omg more.

The naughty shelf of all my smutty vampire books. This is actually on the floor (under my bed >.<) and there are more next to the shitt Anais Nin books. She’s rather over-rated. And yes, JR Ward is there… what can I say? I’m a sucker for vampire porn.

And that is how my shelves are organized. I try to keep running series’ together like Kenyon’s Dark Hunters and Pratchett’s Discworld books. Ward’s books seem to be strewn all over the place though.

Scared? You should be.

Time travel, Vampires and Atlantis

books!

Booking Through Thursday 2-12-09

Do you read any author’s blogs? If so, are you looking for information on their next project? On the author personally? Something else?

There are three author blogs that I have on my reader; Diana GabaldonRichelle Mead and Sherrilyn Kenyon.

  • Gabaldon doesn’t update her blog very often but when she does the posts are always meaty and full of info on her new books. Last week we got to see the cover of her newest novel An Echo in the Bone’ due out later this year. She also puts updates on movie info (cross your fingers that they don’t eff that one up!) and other projects she’s working on.
  • Mead updates almost daily and her posts are always long as well. It makes for fantastic morning over-coffee reading. She updates on a more personal level, giving us an inside view to her daily things along with tours and events. She also hosts contests now and then along with updates on her latest novels.
  • I also read Sherrilyn Kenyon’s blog, but she posts under the psuedonym and character of Acheron Parthenopaeus. Mostly its updates on the Dark Hunter series but sometimes she throws in little fun posts “from” Ash. The blog is like a character study, which means that “Acheron” is the one who writes the entries. (Although sometimes Simi steps in to toast a few things now and again.) Its a fun and light hearted approach to author blogging and it keeps us wolves fans at bay between novels.

The Looking Glass Wars

If you don’t know the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland I suggest you read or view it before you go on because Alice’s adventures are about to be flipped all over the place.

What if Alice’s adventures were real? What if Alice really did come from Wonderland and Carroll’s tale was just a farce to stifle a lost girl far from home? That’s the idea Frank Beddor had when he began writing The Looking Glass Wars.

Or, as Beddor puts it, he investigated the truth behind Alyss (renamed Alice when she slips into our world) and Wonderland for years, piecing together the evidence to make the story complete before he put pen to paper for The Looking Glass Wars.

Along with the truly imaginative plot in general the reader isn’t bogged down with too much information at once. We only get fleeting glimpses of complex emotions the characters seem to have. Instead of spending an insane amount of time walking a character through something heavy, Beddor gives you as little as is absolutely necessary to keep the story moving full speed ahead.

The thing that gives this novel its kick is the detail and even that seems to be given on a need to know basis. But the way Beddor has weaved the old Carroll tale into his own world is truly astounding. A great read and considering Tim Burton is filming a new version of the original tale due out next year Beddor and Alyss can hopefully expect a little extra hype.

Biographies and Authors

books!

Booking Through Thursday 2-5-09

“Have you ever been put off an author’s books after reading a biography of them? Or the reverse – a biography has made you love an author more?”

Diana Gabaldon’s biography notes that she has a Bachelors degree in Zoology, a Masters in Marine Biology and a Ph.D in Ecology. Plus she writes some incredible novels. Something about those three degrees just made me think that much more of her as an author. I only have a Bachelors degree and it was hell getting it, so I have a great amount of respect for all who share in that suffering!

Terry Pratchett also has a great biography. It couldn’t possibly make me love him more as an author because I already do as much as is platonic and professionally acceptable.

No biography has ever really put me off from reading an authors works, but knowing more about Orson Scott Card has sort of put a bad taste in my mouth as far as his novels go. However, Ender’s Game is still on my list of things to read, so can I really say his biography has put me off? Slightly, I suppose, but I still intend to read his books.

Free Valentines

candy mmm

I haven’t bought valentines in a long time, mostly because they all suck, but partly because I’m supposed to be grown up… or something. Well I still have friends I want to send cheesy little pieces of cardboard to, but how many times can you put the same effing message on a different picture of Daniel Radcliff and call it new?

  • Since Warner Brothers has failed me yet again this year I present my own geeky (and somewhat morbid) valentines…

You can download the high res file here to print out and pass around.

  • If you’re a Repo! fan like myself, you will also get a kick out of these…

If you haven’t heard of Repo! yet but are insanely curious from these morbid valentines (and I know you are) check out the site repo-opera.com.

Again, get the high res versions of the shinyshinyvalentines here and the repo valentines here. Enjoy and have a lovely valentines day. O_O

Rise of the Lycans

lycans taste yummy!

My first impression of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans was that the movie, in its entirety, was nothing more than a big nerd wank. Unless you adored the first two movies there’s really no point in seeing this installment of the franchise.

Since Rise of the Lycans was a prequel to the first movie this film is forced, by nature, to engage the viewer based on things other than its gripping plot. Unless, of course, the viewer is willing to allow their nerdiness get in the way of their geekiness.

What I mean is, if watching werewolves and vampires kick the crap out one another is more important to you than the reason they’re kicking the crap out of one another, you will love Lycans. Sadly this movie does little to instill awe in non-nerds. The movie makes no sense out of context, so be sure you watch the first two movies before heading out to see this one.

Spoilers for the first two movies ahead…
