A vampire, a wizard and a god walk into a pub…

books!

Booking Through Thursday 1-8-09

It’s a week or two later than you’d expect, and it may be almost a trite question, but …what were your favorite books from 2008?

My favorite books from last year encompass an odd mix of humor, science fiction and well… more humor. Christopher Moore’s Bloodsucking Fiends hits the top of the list, followed by Terry Pratchett’s… ok any of his books I read in 2008 and bringing up the rear is Sherilyn Kenyon’s Acheron (which really is in the sci-fi section at Borders.)

  • Bloodsucking Fiends was simply the funniest book I think I’ve read. Ever. I did a full review on the book after I read it, so you can check out my dribbling about it here. Don’t worry, I keep plot twists secret in my reviews.
  • Terry Pratchet… a man after my own heart. Nothing in his books make sense and yet, at the same time… everything makes sense.  Someone should really make a box set of all his Discworld novels… except it would be more like a shipping container set. If I read more Discworld novels in 2009 (and let’s be honest, I will) they’ll make my short list of favorites again next year.
  • Something about vampires and Greek mythology just sold me on the entire concept of Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series before I even started reading. Acheron is the apogee of the series so far and is, naturally, the best as well. Breaking from the typical formula of her books, Acheron is split in to two parts. The first is an account of his life prior to the series, the second is his “book” in the series. Lots of people skipped the first because its “too depressing,” but if you ask me, you can’t appreciate the sweet without the sour. Anyway, look for a review soon, I’m already working on it.

And that does it for my favorite ‘08 books! What were yours?
